To a few, the shorthand MOOC is music to the ears but to some the very sound of the word is a major threat to their careers and the industry. It is a fact that that with the introduction of MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses many students round the world will get a chance at higher education. As the internet hit many industries round the world, the collateral damage has been huge. As soon as digital photography came into being, imagine what happened to a company like Kodak. Or when Amazon came into being, imagine the condition of all the high street book stores.

The latest industry that has been the victim of technology and the internet is the education sector. With the advent of MOOCs the traditional colleges and the jobs of professors are under threat. In an MOOC, pieces of learning are compiled by top professors from few of the world’s top colleges into small packages. These are then turned into short term courses which can be taken up by any student who has access to a computer.

Coursera is one of the ‘big players’ among the MOOCs. This was set up by Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, two professors at Stanford University who teach computer science. Professor Ng decided to take lectures from his machine and put them online, around two years ago.

Here’s what he had to say: “I put one of my courses online and it reached an audience of 100,000 students,” he says. “To put that number into context, I used to teach 400 students a year at Stanford, that means that to reach a comparable sized audience I would have had to teach at Stanford for 250 years.” (Source: goo.gl/ih5HN)

He also added that MOOCs have great potential and the fact that it can reach out to thousands of students at once can change the face of higher education in the world. However, some professors think otherwise. They see it as the start to cost cutting plans and also think that the quality of teaching will decrease. They think that is a way to replace professors. Professor Ng also adds that employers are also attracted to candidates who have completed MOOCs on their Curriculum Vitae.

Britain, the pioneers of distance learning through Open Universities are somewhat lagging behind. The CEO of Futurelearn, Simon Nelson said that they wanted to reach out to course participant through social media instead of pretending to replicate a campus atmosphere. Here’s what he had to say:”This is much more than simply pumping out videos,” he says. “And this isn’t just a redistribution of traditional education. This is about trying to use a connected environment of the web to try to re-invent learning in some way.” (Source: http://goo.gl/ih5HN)

Therefore, there are two sides to the story, MOOCs can do a world of good to students who don’t get an opportunity to go to college to complete their higher studies but this could also put an end to traditional schooling in the near future.
